Hydroxychloroquine belongs to a class of drugs called quinoline drugs used for the treatment or prevention of malaria, a disease caused by parasites through a mosquito bite. It is also an anti-rheumatic drug that is used for treating the symptoms of an autoimmune disease called rheumatoid arthritis, such as joint swelling, pain, redness, and stiffness. In addition, hydroxychloroquine is prescribed for another autoimmune disease called discoid or systemic lupus erythematous. Sold under the brand name Plaquenil, hydroxychloroquine received the approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1955. Its close cousin chloroquine received the approval in 1949.
