Weak eyesight is often associated with refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). The common symptoms of poor eyesight are blurry vision, constant watering form eyes and frequent headaches. These eye conditions are caused by genetic influence, poor nutrition, eye strain and aging. There are few eye exercises that help increase the blood flow to the eyes for optimal vision; also they help relax the eye muscles. Eye exercises if done on regular basis can overcome eye strain and improve concentration and focus. You can roll your eyes clockwise and anti-clockwise for a few seconds, then up-down for a few seconds, and then sideways for a few seconds. Blink your eyes continuously for around 20 to 30 times and close them for few seconds. Focus on a distant object for a while. Eye massage also helps in removing eye strain; thereby, improving vision.

  • Palming and Sunning

Palming means rubbing your palms together with great friction to generate heat and then gently keep them on your closed eyes. Perform this exercise for several times a day to improve eyesight. Sunning is to expose your closed eyes to the sun rays for few seconds, which should be followed by palming. Sunrays are believed to contain healing properties that may nourish eyes, but make sure to expose your closed eyes to early morning sunrays.

  • Healthy diet

Consume healthy and well-balanced diet that is rich in essential vitamins like A, B, C, D and E, and amino acids, lutein, beta-carotene, zeaxanthine and chlorophyll. These nutrients are helpful in promoting eye health. One can find these nutrients in carrots, corn, spinach, sweet potatoes, broccoli, kale, blueberries, nuts, seeds, eggs and fatty fish.

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture or acupressure can be useful in improving eyesight, if taken with the help of a qualified healthcare practitioner. According to Chinese medicine, there are certain areas of the body that can be activated by using tiny needles or pressure to improve the vision, especially around the eyes. In this method, the experts also advise people to walk barefoot on grass for 30 minutes early in the morning to activate optic nerve fibers.

  • Herbal remedies

According to naturopathy, there are few herbal remedies that can help improve the eyesight, such as ginkgo biloba, bilberry, fennels, asparagus, Indian gooseberry and almonds. These herbs are available in the form of supplements that should be taken after consulting the medical practitioner.

  • Do not stare at a TV or computer screen for a long hours
  • Use an anti-glare screen if required
  • Take frequent breaks and rest your eyes for every 20 minutes
  • Avoid reading or looking at objects in dim light as it may strain your eyes
  • Wear sunglasses if you are going out in sun to protect your eyes
  • Sleep well, get adequate amount of sleep to rest your eyes
  • Get regular eye check-ups
