Consuming Bananas May Lower Chances of Stroke in Women who’re Past Menopause

the studyAccording to a recent study conducted by a group of researchers, consumption of bananas may cut down the risk of heart ailments in women who’ve already past the menopausal stages of their lives. Essentially, the study was conducted with an aim of gauging the effectiveness of potassium in relation to reducingheart and its related ailments. The study included various foods that are rich in potassium, but has bananas as its focus as they are the most common source of potassium available to man.

The study

To conduct the study, the researchers approached about 90,137 women who ticked the parameters of being aged 50 – 79 years, and who’re in the postmenopausal period of their lives. The women were studied for about 11 years, during which time it was also noted that if the women suffered strokes, heart aches, etc., and also whether they had succumbed to the same. In addition, it was ensured that any woman about to participate in the study hadn’t gone through such ailments at the start of it. Lastly, it was made sure as well that all the participants consumed an average of 2,611 mg of potassium per day.

Results

As per the official recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), an average woman must consume at least a minimum of 3,510 gm of potassium in her daily diet. However, of the women participating in the aforementioned study, it was found that only 16.6% had done well to match the WHO’s recommendation or had bettered it. It is noted in the results of the study that each medium-sized banana contains approximately 430 mg of potassium in it, so the potassium consumed by the women was calculated by keeping this number in mind.

From the women who recorded the highest amounts of potassium in their bodies, it was furnished that the risk of a general stroke had been cut down by 12 percent in them, and the chances of them going through an ischaemic stroke (a condition where the blood supply to the brain is interrupted) had come down by as much as 16 percent. These figures were revealed in comparison with the women who had the least amount of potaResultsssium in their bodies, of all the women participating in the study.

In the group of women who weren’t suffering from high blood pressure and consumed high amounts of potassium, it was noted that the risk of them being struck by an ischaemic stroke had gone down by 27 percent, and the possibility of them suffering from any general stroke had declined by 21 percent. Regarding the group of women who were ailing from hypertension, it was found that those who consumed large portions of potassium had significantly lowered the risk of them dying by doing so. However, their superior consumption of potassium could not help them reduce the risk of them suffering from a stroke.

Another interesting observation that came through this study is that the women who had more potassium in their bodies had deducted their chances of a premature death by 10 percent, when compared to the women who ate the least amount of potassium all through the study. The study had also fairly indicated that a high intake of potassium produces the best possible results, when it is done so before the onset of high blood pressure.

Researchers’ word

Concluding from the results of the study, the researchers are of the opinion that potassium intake significantly reduces the chances of stroke in postmenopausal women. For this purpose, they’ve suggested women belonging to such an age group and condition to source their potassium from foods like bananas, white beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. However, they’ve also alerted people against excessive consumption of potassium, as doing so could prove fatal for the heart.
